Advantage Digital SLR Cameras have over Point and Shoots.

If you are puzzled by this term, you're in the right place. A DSLR is an acronym for “Digital Single Lens Reflex.” Take away the D and you get the film version – a “Single Lens Reflex.” Since most people own digital cameras these days, I am going to use DSLR and SLR interchangeably in this booklet to refer to a digital single lens reflex camera.

The following list indicates the main advantages of a digital SLR camera as compared to a point and shoot camera.

Advantage #1) The ability to exchange lenses gives the photographer the choice to use the best lens for the job. Lenses for DSLRs are built faster, with lens openings as wide as 2.8.

Advantage #2) There's no shutter lag. Shutter lag is a delay between triggering the shutter and when the image is actually recorded. Point and shoots have a 2-3 second shutter lag, resulting in blurry images of moving objects. SLRs have less shutter lag, but you must remember to use a fast shutter speed when recording action shots.

Advantage #3 There's more manual controls so you can make creative control decisions regarding exposure, composition and visual impact.

Advantage #4) You see exactly what the lens sees. With P&S cameras it is typical to use the LCD to compose the photo. With a DSLR camera a viewfinder is the better choice;you see exactly what the lens sees.

Advantage #5) The ability to use external flash units via hot-shoe attachment. External flash units are more powerful than built-in flash and also provide softer, more flattering light without the dreaded red-eye.

A digital SLR camera will help you become a better photographer. In the following 13 chapters you will see why an SLR camera is superior to a point and shoot camera and how you can become a better photographer using the manual controls. So ditch the old point and shoot, and come learn with me!
