Digital camera batteries
Don't leave home without them.

Digital camera use up a lot of battery power due to their power hungry digital electronics. Most digital cameras these days come with a proprietary Lithium ion rechargeable battery. They are lightweight and can be charged many, many times. It is a good idea to have a spare battery on hand because once the battery is drained it can take up to 1 hour to fully recharge the battery.

If your digital camera calls for alkaline batteries (AA) you will need to find a rechargeable substitute, otherwise you will be going through batteries like water. The most environmentally friendly type of rechargeable AA battery is the Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMh) as they are powerful and they do not contain cadmium. Lithium ion (Li-on) AA batteries are now available which have a high power capacity. It is best to drain the batteries completely before recharging them. Rechargeable AA batteries will cost more upfront but in the long run will save you tons of money.

You can conserve on power by not previewing images on the LCD screen. Better yet, if you can turn off the LCD screen that would also help conserve.

If you are going to be doing a lot of shooting (perhaps at a wedding or event) it is best to invest in a battery pack for your camera. They can add to the expense and weight of your camera but are indispensable in times of intense shooting. Be careful you do not expose your battery pack to rain or moisture (or any rechargeable battery for that case) since they contain a large amount of energy. Better be safe than sorry.

Most digital camera will come equipped with a battery and charger. Spare batteries can be purchased as a back-up.You can never have too many batteries!
